Named after its fragrance, Rosa 'Gardenia' is an attractive Wichuraiana Rambler Rose which is free flowering, hardy, drought resistant and even shade tolerant. Extremely vigorous, this large climber features long and graceful, flexible branches bearing bronzy-green, glossy and healthy leaves and large sprays of soft creamy-yellow, cushioned, double flowers. Opening from yellow buds, the medium-sized (4 in. or 10cm), quartered, double blossoms (26-40 petals) fade to near-white with age and last about 4 weeks. Sweetly scented, Rose 'Gardenia' is a strong garden performer, producing masses of flowers. 'Gardenia is a Hybrid Wichurana resulting from a cross between Rosa Wichuraiana and the lovely Tea Rose 'Perle des Jardins'.

  • Blooms in flushes in late spring or summer. The clusters of blooms are produced on the previous year’s growth, therefore, this climber should be pruned after flowering.
  • Grows up to 15-20 ft. tall (450-600 cm) and spreads 12-15 ft. (360-450 cm). An excellent choice for arches, trellises, walls or even containers.
  • Best grown in full sun, in rich, fertile with adequate moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates some shade.
  • Drought tolerant
  • Good disease resistance. Susceptibility to blackspot or mildew. Protect the flowers from spring frost!
  • Bred by Michael Henry Horvath in 1898.
