Polypodium – Ferns

Widely distributed throughout the world, Polypodium (Polypody) is a genus of terrestrial or epiphytic (growing in mosses on trees and logs) ferns with creeping rhizomes bearing simple or pinnate fronds at intervals. Evergreen or deciduous, polypodies are cultivated for their sculptural fronds and commonly used as ornamental plants for shady locations. Thriving in partial shade and fibrous, well-drained soils, they are suitable for wild gardens and woodlands. Polypodies have a bitter-sweet taste and are among the rather few ferns that are used in cooking.
