Polypodium virginianum (Rock Polypody)

Polypodium virginianum (Rock Polypody) is an evergreen fern with attractive, thick textured, lance-shaped, bright green fronds, cut deeply on both sides of their central leaf rib. The spores line the backs of the fronds in rows of rusty orange clumps (sori). Remaining lush and fresh-looking throughout the season, Rock Polypody spreads by creeping rhizomes and colonizes at will on trees or rock formations that are coated with moss and organic debris – without being invasive. Gracing cottage gardens, rock gardens or woodland gardens, Rock Polypody provides four seasons of interest and is also effective as a companion to other shade-loving ferns, perennials, and wildflowers. Plant it in the crevices of rocks or on rotted logs in moist, shaded sites.

• Grows up to 6-12 in. tall and wide (15-30 cm). Under the right conditions, Rock Polypody will spread, gently expanding its presence in the garden.
• Performs best in part shade to full shade in moderately fertile, moist to mesic, well-drained soils. Tolerates dry soil, rocky soil and drought. Prefers sheltered areas where there is some protection from the wind.
• This plant is a great choice for shady beds and borders, underplanting of roses and shrubs, cottage gardens, rock gardens or woodland gardens.
• Virtually pest and disease free. Rabbit resistant.
• Dead or damaged fronds may be removed as necessary.
• Propagate by division or by spores.
• Native to the Eastern United States and Canada.
