An outstanding Crabapple, Malus 'Brandywine' is an upright, broad-rounded deciduous tree with a long season of interest. Opening from deep rose-red buds, masses of very fragrant, double pink, roselike blossoms appear in mid-spring, just as the foliage is unfolding. Draped in clusters along the branches, they provide a remarkable display of sheer beauty. The flowers are followed by abundant clusters of large, yellow, cherry-like fruits that mature in the fall. Attractive to birds, they do not persist and can be messy if allowed to drop on the lawn or walkways. Emerging brick-red in spring, the large pointy leaves mature dark green with a reddish tint in summer and turn reddish-purple in fall, before shedding to the ground, revealing attractive silvery twigs. Highly tolerant of urban pollution and excellent resistance to mildew.

  • Grows up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide (4-6 m).
  • A full sun lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens.
  • Require only minimal pruning in late winter, to remove damaged, diseased, or misplaced growth.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
