Ligustrum japonicum 'Rotundifolium' (Japanese Privet) is a compact, evergreen shrub with upright stems clothed in glossy, thick, rounded, dark green leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm). Upright panicles of small, creamy-white flowers appear in late spring to early summer. The fragrant blossoms are considered by many to have an unpleasant aroma. They give way to small, glossy berries which ripen in fall and persist throughout winter. Slower-growing than the species, Rotundifolium is perfect for small gardens and can be planted in the shrub border, as a small hedge, or in containers.
