Thalictrum Black Stockings (Meadow Rue)

Award-winning Thalictrum ‘Black Stockings’ (Meadow Rue) is a tall, herbaceous perennial with generous sprays of fluffy, bright lavender-magenta flowers borne on tall, upright, jet-black stems. They rise above an equally attractive foliage clump of lacy, refined, green leaves, that is reminiscent of columbine, and remains good-looking throughout the season.

They rise above an equally attractive foliage clump of lacy, refined, green leaves, that is reminiscent of columbine, and remains good-looking throughout the season. Blooming from mid to late summer, this willowy plant is a good choice for attracting bees and butterflies. Low maintenance, it is perfect for the back of partially shaded borders.

  • Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall (120-180 cm) and 18-24 in. wide (45-60 cm). Stems may require staking.
  • Thrives in rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Intolerant of hot and humid summers. Dappled shade is preferred. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Mulch in colder climates.
  • Fits beautifully in any beds, borders, cottage gardens or woodland gardens. Great for cutting too!
