Solidago caesia (Wreath Goldenrod)
Shade-tolerant, Solidago caesia (Wreath Goldenrod) is a herbaceous perennial wildflower forming a clump of arching, blue-green stems clad with lance-shaped, toothed, medium to dark green leaves, 2-5 in. long (5-12 cm). Blooming for about one month in late summer to fall, the plant bears loose clusters of 1-12 tiny, bright yellow flowers in the leaf axils along the length of the stems, as well as a large terminal cluster. Attractive to birds, butterflies, hummingbirds and a wide variety of insects, especially short-tongued bees, wasps, and flies, Wreath Goldenrod provides a bold splash of color in the late season garden. Easy to grow, low care and trouble free, this goldenrod species is less aggressive than the tall goldenrods. It is a good choice for a wildflower meadow, cottage garden or an open woodland garden.
- Grows up to 18-36 in. tall and wide (45-90 cm). Will occasionally form small colonies from underground rhizomes or self-seeding.
- Performs best in full sun to part shade in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Preference is medium shade to partial sun, mesic to dry-mesic conditions. It is not fussy about soils and tolerates dry soils, poor soils and clay. Drought tolerant once established.
- A beautiful plant for beds and borders, cottage gardens, wild gardens, wildflower meadows or butterfly gardens.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
- Propagate by seed.
- Native to central and eastern North America from Quebec and Ontario to Florida and Texas.
