Rosa Altissimo (Climbing Rose)

An old favorite since 1966, Rosa Altissimo is a vigorous climbing rose with masses of long-lasting, bright blood-red, single flowers, 5 in. across (12 cm), with a boss of deep golden-yellow stamens. The flowers are produced freely, early in the summer with regular repeats thereafter. This continual blooming rose features long, stiff stems which are clothed with large, dark leathery, exceptionally healthy leaves. An excellent climbing rose for walls, fences or to train as a pillar or support to the posts of a pergola.

• Grows up to 7-9 ft. tall (210-270 cm) and 5 ft. wide (150 m). Can be grown as a large shrub if kept in check by pruning.
• Best grown in full sun, in humus-rich, fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Poor soil tolerant. For best flowering, apply a balanced fertilizer and mulch in late winter or early spring and a balanced fertilizer again in early summer.
• Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn or by chip budding in summer
• Hybridized in France by J. Schwartz in 1879.
