More cold-hardy than the species, Punica granatum var. nana (Dwarf Pomegranate) is a compact deciduous shrub with lustrous, narrowly oblong, rich green leaves, that emerge bronze in spring. Evergreen in warm winter areas, they change to brilliant yellow in the fall. Blooming throughout the summer, a profusion of funnel-shaped, bright orange-red flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), are borne at the branch tips. Shining against the foliage, the flamboyant flowers are followed by spherical, reddish-brown, leathery-skinned fruits, up to 2 in. across (5 cm). While these fruits are edible, they are a bit too sour to really be considered palatable. Perfect for small gardens, containers, and gorgeous in mass plantings.

  • Grows up to 2-4 ft. tall and wide (60-120cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in rich, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. During growth, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. Water sparingly in winter. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Perfect for beds and borders, Mediterranean-style gardens. Where not winter hardy, grow in containers to be overwintered indoors.
  • Remove wayward shoots in spring.
  • Generally pest and disease free.
  • Propagate by seed or semi-hardwood cuttings.
