Phlomis russeliana, commonly known as Jerusalem Sage or Turkish Sage, brings interest to the garden almost all year round! First, with its originating flower buds and the resultant flowers themselves in summer, then with its distinctive dome-shaped seed heads in fall and winter. This evergreen perennial features pale yellow hooded flowers in architectural whorled clusters that rise well above the basal foliage, which consists of a low ground-covering mound, up to 15 in. tall (37 cm), of aromatic, heart-shaped, gray-green leaves. A great sight in all seasons.

  • Hardy, it blooms profusely from early to late summer and remains extremely attractive throughout fall and winter thanks to its columns of ornamental seed heads that persist and provide food for the birds. They are particularly striking when covered in hoarfrost or snow.
  • Fast-growing, this upright perennial elegantly rises up to 2-3 ft. high (60-90 cm) and spreads 2 ft. wide (60 cm).
  • Combines beautifully in striking color combinations with other blue-flowering perennial plants such as Lavenders, hardy Geraniums, or ornamental grasses. Very useful and adaptable in the garden. Excellent choice for the dry sunny bordermeadows, cottage gardens, or wild gardens. Makes excellent cut flowers and looks lovely in dried arrangements. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Low maintenance and trouble-free, Jerusalem Sage performs best in full sun but tolerates light shade. It thrives in fertile, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Sandy soils with excellent drainage are preferred.
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society (1993)
  • Spreads quickly without being invasive.
