Papaver alpinum (Alpine Poppy)

Papaver alpinum (Alpine Poppy) is a short-lived perennial forming a small tuft of finely-divided, fern-like, blue-green leaves. In late spring to mid-summer, solitary crepe-papery, cup-shaped flowers, 1.5-2 in. across (4-5 cm), bloom on slender, leafless stems well above the foliage. The charming blossoms can be yellow, orange, red or white. Hardy, this dwarf poppy will bloom the first year from seed sown in fall or early spring. Alpine Poppy is suitable for a rock garden.

  • Grows up to 8-10 in. tall (20-25 cm) and 4 in. wide (10 cm). Where adapted, will readily self-seed, maintaining its presence in the garden.
  • Prefers full sun in deep, fertile, medium moisture, exceptionally fast-draining soils. Tolerates some light afternoon shade in hot summer areas. Alpine Poppy is intolerant of drought or poorly drained soil. Thrives in climates with cool summer temperatures, but struggles in hot and humid conditions.
  • Pretty addition to rock gardens, gravel gardens, cottage gardens and border fronts.
  • Easy to grow and virtually care-free.
  • Mulch in winter until well established.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids and downy mildew.
  • Propagate by seed or division.
  • Papaver alpinum is native to the Alps and Pyrenees Mountains of Europe.
