Its foliage of oval, wavy margined, deeply cut leaves emerges bronze-purple in spring, matures to deep red-purple, sometimes tinged with green and brown, before turning orange-brown in the fall. They are followed by bristly fruits which ripen in the fall. This purple-leaved European Beech makes a superb shade tree or specimen tree for a large landscape. Excellent for hedges and screens.
