Eremurus (Foxtail Lilies) provide quite a breathtaking sight with their flower clusters rising high on imposing stalks – towering up to 8 feet (240 cm) above the ground – making them one of the most spectacular bulbous plants. The name of this genus comes from 'ekemos' meaning 'solitary' and 'oura' meaning 'tall'. All of the several dozen species originated in Asia. When well-sited with good soil preparation, Eremurus can be long-lived showstoppers in the garden.

  • Long, sturdy, round flower spires develop from the leaf rosette starting in late spring to mid summer. The slender flower clusters are richly covered with hundreds of tiny white, yellow, pink or orange blossoms and are fragrant. Since the leaves of the plant wither back during the flowering period, make sure that the tuberous rootstocks are planted among ground covers that will provide added attractiveness.
  • Thriving in full sun, in rich and well-drained soils, Foxtail Lilies are not fussy about soil conditions as long as there is excellent drainage. Easy to grow, they enjoy good drought tolerance.
  • Virtually pest and disease free, Foxtail Lilies attract the energy of butterflies and hummingbirds, but are deer and critter resistant.
  • Stunning in front of a dark background, at the back of the border or as cut flowers. Plant in groups of 5 minimum for best visual impact.
  • Foxtail Lilies grow from a tuberous root (not a true bulb) where they store their food in fleshy, starfish-shaped roots. Plant in early fall (in mild climates) or in spring (cold climates) in a sheltered location to protect your Eremurus from strong winds. Although the tubers are winter hardy, a mulch layer is highly recommended.
  • Plant your bulbs deep enough so that the top of the crown is only covered with 2 in. (5 cm) of soil. Allow space around each plant as it likes the sun to warm its tubers. Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and do not allow the soil to dry out. After flowering, you may reduce watering.
