Hard to beat for fall color, award-winning Crataegus persimilis 'Prunifolia' (Cockspur Hawthorn) is a small, broad-crowned, deciduous tree with four seasons of interest. In late spring, it is generously covered in dense clusters of strongly fragrant, white flowers and provides a spectacular floral display. In summer, its branches are clothed with glossy, broad-oval, gleaming green leaves. Like most hawthorns, they are well armed with sharp thorns, about 2 in. long (5 cm). In the fall, the foliage turns glorious shades of scarlet, deep yellow and purple. Adding their charm to the show are crimson round fruits clustered among the glowing leaves. Attractive to wild birds, they adorn the branches well into winter. Even the spreading, dome shape of the tree remains imposing throughout winter. The flamboyant flowers and blazing fall color make it a lovely specimen in a lawn.
