Fabulous at adding architectural height and late summer blooms to a shaded border, Actaea Simplex (Bugbane), formerly known as Cimicifuga Simplex, is very eye-catching with its long, fluffy spires, 12-24 in. long (30-60 cm), packed with strongly fragrant, tiny starry creamy-white flowers. On display in late summer to early fall, they rise above a deep green foliage which provides excellent texture and color to the landscape throughout the growing season.

  • Typically growing up to 3-4 ft. tall (90-120 cm) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm), Bugbane thrives in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Humus rich, moisture-retentive soils are preferred. Provide a sheltered location from strong winds. The flower spires tend to gracefully bend toward bright light when grown in substantial shade.
  • Trouble-free and easy care, Bugbane is a welcomed addition to beds, borders, woodlands, cottage gardens, naturalized areas.
  • Bugbane attracts birds and butterflies but deer and rabbits ignore it!
  • Cut back after flowering or fruiting. Propagate by seed sown in pots in a cold frame in autumn or by division in early spring
