Native to the Himalayas, Bergenia ciliata (Fringed Bergenia) is a large-leaved, slow-growing, clump-forming perennial. Native to the Himalayas, Bergenia ciliata (Fringed Bergenia) is a large-leaved, slow-growing, clump-forming perennial. Borne on stout stems in early spring, erect clusters of pale pink flowers with rose-pink calyces rise above attractive rosettes of thick, leathery, finely-toothed, fresh green leaves. The large, rounded leaves, 12 in. wide (30 cm), are covered on both sides with soft, downy hairs. Unlike most Bergenias, this species is deciduous and will die back for the winter. In mild winter areas, Fringed Bergenia makes a splendid container plant.

  • Grows up to 9-12 in. tall (22-30 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Easily grown in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils in sun or part shade. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soils. Some drought tolerance once established but performs best with consistent moisture. Soils should not be allowed to dry out completely.
  • Undemanding and virtually disease-free, this Bergenia is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, banks and slopes, underplanting of roses and shrubs, cottage gardens, or city gardens
  • Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Remove faded flower spikes
  • Propagate by division (spring or fall) or by seed
