Hosta fortunei var. hyacinthina (Hyacinthine Plantain Lily) forms an attractive, dense mound of broadly ovate, slightly puckered, boldly-veined leaves, 8 in. long (20 cm), which emerge blue-green and mature to gray-green. The leaves are delicately edged with a fine creamy-white line. Racemes of funnel-shaped, lavender flowers appear in mid to late summer on slightly bending scapes, rising well above the foliage to 30 in. tall (75 cm). But the primary contribution of this hosta is its lovely foliage which brings some color to shady areas.
- Easy grower, this Hosta grows 14-18 in. tall (35-45 cm) and spreads 18-24 in. (45-60 cm).
- Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold, dry winds.
- Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or cottage gardens. Great as a groundcover or underplanting shrubs and roses.
- Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
- Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant's growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
- Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
