Rosa Munstead Wood (English Rose)

Rosa Munstead Wood is a stunning English Rose with large, fully petaled (about 74 petals) blossoms, light crimson in the bud, but as the center gradually reveals itself, become a very rich velvety crimson. Cupped at first, they become shallowly cupped over time and contrast beautifully with the foliage: a mix of red-bronze leaves maturing to mid-green.

Repeat-flowering, Rosa Munstead Wood is a stunning English Old Rose Hybrid with large, fully petalled (about 74 petals) blossoms, light crimson in the bud, but as the center gradually reveals itself, become a very rich velvety crimson. Cupped at first, they become shallowly cupped over time and contrast beautifully with the foliage: a mix of red-bronze leaves maturing to mid-green. Despite their size, they are held nicely on a healthy, broad, and bushy shrub. Delightfully and strongly fragrant, with an Old Rose scent bearing a fruity note. Bred by David Austin, this charming beauty was introduced in 2007.

  • Blooming in flushes from late spring until frost, it is an excellent repeat bloomer.
  • Grows up to 3 feet tall (90 cm) and spreads 2.5 feet wide (75 cm). An excellent choice for the front of beds and borders and will grow happily in containers. Spectacular when combined with the cool blue colors of salvia, nepeta, or lavender.
  • Plant it where you will be able to enjoy its perfume daily: near a doorway, along a path, near your patio or deck. Excellent cut flowers.
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society (2012)
  • Best grown in full sun, in rich, fertile with adequate moisture, well-drained soils.
  • Excellent disease resistance.
  • This lovely rose was named after 'Munstead Wood' which was Gertrude Jekyll’s garden in Surrey, where she worked on many gardening books.
  • David Austin’s English Roses combine the flower forms and perfume of Old Roses with the color range and repeat-flowering habits of modern roses. As a Rose breeder, David Austin’s achievement is in marrying the romantic “English Rose” look with reliable garden performance, vigorous growth, full bushes, disease resistance, and prolific season-long bloom. Over 200 English Roses have been released since 1961, many of them receiving the highest rewards.
