Vaccinium Top Hat (Blueberry)

Vaccinium ‘Top Hat’ (Highbush Blueberry) is a dwarf-rounded deciduous shrub, with small oval fresh green leaves turning attractive shades of orange in the fall. In late spring, a profusion of white flowers give way to clusters of medium-sized, firm, dusky blue blueberries which ripen in mid-season (early-mid summer). Perfect for small gardens or containers.

Top Hat is a self-pollinating blueberry variety, but it is recommended that more than one be planted to ensure maximum pollination and the largest fruit yields.

  • Grows up to 24-30 in. tall (60-75 cm) and 18-24 in. wide (45-60 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in well-drained, moisture-retentive, organically rich, acidic soil. Plant in a sheltered site and provide good organic mulch.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Watch out for vine weevil, powdery mildews, and chlorosis (manganese and iron deficiencies).
  • No pruning is required.
  • Propagation: Take 4-6in (10-15cm) softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in early summer.
