Solidago sempervirens (Seaside Goldenrod)
A most striking goldenrod, Solidago sempervirens (Seaside Goldenrod) is a herbaceous perennial wildflower forming a tight clump of narrow, evergreen basal leaves topped by leafy, erect or arching stalks. Blooming in late summer to fall, they bear terminal or upper axillary, one-sided clusters packed with large, bright deep-yellow flowers. The fleshy, waxy leaves are quite large, 12 in. long or more (30 cm), and deter salt and sand penetration. Seaside Goldenrod is an excellent nectar source for bees, honeybees, and butterflies. Its dried seeds provide a food source for birds. Adding a bold splash of color in the late season garden, Seaside Goldenrod is easy to grow, low care and trouble free. This goldenrod species does not spread by rhizomes or become invasive. Resistant to salt spray, it is a good choice for seaside gardens and coastal landscapes.
- Grows up to 2-8 ft. tall (60-240 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in sandy, dry to moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of standing water, and drought, this plant is highly salt tolerant.
- A beautiful plant for coastal gardens, butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
- Pinch the growing tips in early summer for a more compact plant.
- Propagate by seed or by division.
- Native to the coastal areas of eastern North America.
