Award-winning Saxifraga x urbium (London Pride) is an evergreen perennial forming a dense, spreading carpet of rosettes of spoon-shaped, long-stalked leaves with scalloped margins. In late spring to early summer, a profusion of pink-flushed white flowers borne in airy panicles, rise on 12 in. (30 cm) stems above the foliage and create a ravishing display. Tough and easy in a wide variety of conditions, Saxifraga x urbium is undemanding, versatile, and adds year-round interest in the shade garden. This hybrid between S. spathularis and S. umbrosa is particularly useful as a shade-tolerant ground cover, quickly making large colonies after a few years.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 12 in. tall (30 cm). Will spread and provide rapid ground cover without being aggressively invasive.
  • Best in part shade to full shade in average, well-drained soils. Soil pH is not critical, and it will grow in acid or alkaline soils as long as moisture can be provided. Shady, moist areas are preferred.
  • A great choice for beds and borders, edging, underplanting roses, and shrubs, or as a groundcover.
  • Cut off flower stems after flowering.
  • Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for vine weevil.
  • Propagate by division in spring or detach rosettes and root in late spring to early summer.
