One mature plant can produce 80 or more flowering stems, providing a great floral show. Each blossom features 8-12 drooping yellow rays surrounding a prominent brownish-purple center cone. They are borne atop strong stems that do not need staking. Rich in nectar and pollen, the showy blossoms attract honey bees, butterflies, and pollinating insects. The basal leaves, 6 in. long (15 cm), have long petioles, while the shorter upper stem leaves are stalkless. Leaves and stems are hairy. Long-lived, Tall Coneflower is fairly adaptable, tolerating the moist to wet settings of acid bogs as well as short periods of drought once well-established. Vigorous, Tall Coneflower spreads rampantly by underground rhizomes and is appropriate for large landscapes. It is an excellent addition to naturalized areas, wildflower meadows, prairies, cottage gardens, and native plant gardens. It also makes perfect cut flowers!
