Pulsatilla rubra (Red Pasque Flower)
Pulsatilla rubra (Red Pasque Flower) is a clump-forming perennial boasting large bell-shaped dusky red flowers, 3 in. wide (6-8 cm), on short stems in early spring. The attractive blossoms contrast beautifully with the luminous boss of golden yellow stamens. Nodding when they open, they gradually extend upwards to face the sun. They are followed by equally ornamental, plume-like seedheads (resembling those of clematis) in fluffy spherical clusters. The ferny, silky foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season. Pasque Flowers will seed themselves all over, if you are lucky, then go summer dormant. Enjoying a long season of interest, these low growing plants are suitable for rock gardens or the front of the perennial border. They combine well with spring-flowering bulbs and ground covers.
- Grows up to 8-12 in. tall (20-30 cm) and 9-12 in. wide (22-30 cm).
- Thrives in full sun in fertile, well-drained soils. Good drainage is essential to survival. Needs consistent moisture in hot summer climates. Resents disturbance and can be hard to establish
- Rabbit resistant
- Easy to grow, Pasque Flower is a good choice for areas of the garden that are sunny and dry.
- No serious insect or disease issues.
- Excellent addition to sunny border fronts, rock gardens, or alpine beds.
- Propagate by seed sown as soon as ripe. Basal or root cuttings may be possible, but are challenging
- Native to southwestern Europe
