Prunus Toka (Hybrid Plum)

One of the best pollinators, Prunus ‘Toka’ is a small hybrid plum tree with an upright, vase-shaped habit and a dense canopy clothed in pointy, emerald green leaves. In spring, it bursts into a profusion of sweetly fragrant, white 5-petaled blossoms, creating a fantastic display.

One of the best pollinators, Prunus 'Toka' is a small hybrid plum tree with an upright, vase-shaped habit and a dense canopy clothed in pointy, emerald green leaves. In spring, it bursts into a profusion of sweetly fragrant, white 5-petaled blossoms, creating a fantastic display. They produce tons of pollen each year and are followed by a bountiful crop of medium-sized, richly flavored, pointed, purple-red plums in mid to late summer. Their beautiful apricot flesh is firm, sweet, and very juicy. They are perfect for eating, canning, or making jelly. A self-pollinating fruit tree, you may still want to plant pollinating partners to increase the size of your crops. Introduced in 1911, Toka Plum is a cross between the American Plum (Prunus americana) and the Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina). This is a cold-hardy, fast-growing, vigorous, and very ornamental variety.

  • Typically grows up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide (450-600 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in loamy, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil, well-drained soils.
  • This Plum tree will begin fruiting in 2-3 growing seasons.
  • Train your plum tree when young to an open-center shape to make sure all branches will always be bathed in light and air.
  • Plums require minimal pruning which should be done after flowering when the tree is still leafless. In maturity, prune mostly to let light into the center of the tree and to encourage a moderate amount of new growth for the following year’s fruit. About 20% of the new growth each year is removed to rejuvenate the tree and control its spread.
  • Plums can be picked before they are completely ripe since they will finish ripening off the tree
  • Keep an eye out for bacterial canker, bacterial leaf spot, brown rot, and black knot disease.
