Picea – Spruces
A terrific genus all year round, Picea (Spruces) are evergreen shrubs or trees available in a wide range of shapes and sizes and useful for foundation plantings, rock gardens or containers. Their rigid, needles are attached singly to the branches in a spiral fashion and can be all shades of green. Hanging down, their cones remain on the tree until the next growing season, when they fall intact on the ground. Most spruces prefer acidic, moist, well-drained soils in full sun but many tolerate light shade. Not favored by deer.
