What is Sweet Marjoram?

  • Sweet Marjoram is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae, along with basil, rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, and lavender.
     
  • Native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia, Sweet Marjoram is a bushy sub-shrub forming a mound of highly aromatic, ovate, gray-green leaves. The leaves are more delicate in flavor than those of its cousin, Origanum vulgare (Common Oregano). In mid to late summer, it produces clusters of tiny, two-lipped, white, or pale pink flowers.
     
  • This herb grows 12-24 inches tall and wide (30-60 cm) and is widely cultivated for culinary and medicinal use.
     
  • Evergreen in warmer areas, Marjoram is often grown as an annual in cooler climates.
