Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood)
A sight to behold, Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood) is a large deciduous coniferous tree of great beauty. It features an upright, narrowly conical form that enhances many landscapes. Unlike most cone-bearing trees, Dawn Redwood loses its foliage each winter. Delicate flat sprays of narrow, bright green leaves emerge in spring, and mature to emerald green in summer, before turning rich shades of yellow-brown, pink, apricot, and copper in the fall. Reddish on young trees, the bark on mature trees is darker, often deeply fissured, and attractively flared at the base. Oval, light brown female cones and pendant globose male cones are produced. The russet-red fall color of its lacy needles and the interesting winter silhouette are some outstanding characteristics of Dawn Redwood. A spectacular tree for stream banks or pond edges. A single specimen is an imposing sight and groves are effective.
- Grows up to 70-100 ft. tall (21-30 m) and 15-25 ft. wide (4-8 m). A very fast grower, up to 4-6 ft. per year (120-180 cm).
- A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, well-drained, or poorly drained soils. Wet and clay soil tolerant.
- Virtually pest and disease free.
- Requires little pruning
- Propagate by seed, hardwood, or semi-hardwood cuttings
- Native to Central China
