Iris japonica (Fringed Iris)

Iris japonica (Fringed Iris) is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial with white or pale blue, orchid-like flowers, up to 2 in. across (5 cm), adorned with deep purple and conspicuous orange crests on each fringed fall. Blooming profusely in late spring to early summer, they are borne on branched stems and rise above handsome fans of glossy, sword-shaped, evergreen foliage.

  • Grows up to 10-12 in. tall (25-30 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm). Naturalizes well and spreads by creeping rhizomes without being invasive.
  • Performs best in part shade, in moist, humus-rich, soils. Some tolerance to full shade. Provide a sheltered site.
  • A welcomed addition to beds and borders, rock gardens, and containers.
  • Deer resistant.
  • No serious insect or disease issues but watch for slugs, snails, thrips, and gray molds.
  • Remove any dying foliage in autumn, old flower stems can be cut down after flowering.
  • Propagate by seed sown in pots in a cold frame in autumn or spring. Propagate by division of rhizomes from midsummer to early autumn
  • All parts may cause discomfort if ingested. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
