A popular cultivar, Hypericum frondosum 'Sunburst' (St. John's Wort) is a tight, dense, upright, mounded shrub with large, golden-yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), from early to mid-summer. Each cup-shaped flower presents 5 petals surrounding a prominent tuft of golden stamens. They are followed by reddish-brown fruits that ripen in fall and persist well into winter. When not in bloom, this shrub is still a pleasure to look at, thanks to its foliage of glossy blue-green leaves. Even when not in leaf, it remains attractive with its exfoliating cinnamon-brown to purplish bark on mature stems. This deer-resistant little shrub makes an excellent border plant and is perfect for adding bright summer color to the garden. Depending on the severity of the climate, this is an evergreen, semi-evergreen, or deciduous shrub.

  • Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm)
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers moist, rich, sandy loams. Drought tolerant.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is also generally pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Perfect as a specimen or massed in borders, cottage gardens. Makes a pretty hedge. Can be planted en masse to produce an informal but effective large-scale groundcover.
