Hymenocallis Sulphur Queen (Peruvian Daffodil)

Award-winning Hymenocallis ‘Sulphur Queen’ (Peruvian Daffodil) is a tender bulbous perennial boasting showy umbels of up to 6 large, deliciously scented, sulfur-yellow flowers in mid to late summer. The flowers open up to look like giant yellow spiders, but these spiders come with a wonderfully sweet fragrance.

Award-winning Hymenocallis 'Sulphur Queen' (Peruvian Daffodil) is a tender bulbous perennial boasting showy umbels of up to 6 large, deliciously scented, sulfur-yellow flowers in mid to late summer. The flowers open up to look like giant yellow spiders, but these spiders come with a wonderfully sweet fragrance. Resembling a daffodil, each flower features a frilly-edged, pale yellow cup with a green striped throat and 6 spreading petals. The blossoms rise atop leafless stalks, well above the basal foliage of strap-shaped, dark green leaves. Adding flare to borders and containers, this Peruvian Daffodil is a must for the evening garden where its citrus-like fragrance can be enjoyed.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 12 in. wide (30 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. Peruvian Daffodil does not like temperatures less than 59°F (15°C) so do not plant it out too early in the spring and bring it indoors early in the fall before it gets hit with heavy frosts.
  • If you live in a cool area (hardiness zones 3-7) and you want to save your Peruvian Daffodil bulbs for next spring, you may dig them up before the first frost and store them over the winter. Place them in a cool, dry location in a dry medium such as peat or perlite where the temperature remains between 55-60°F (12-15°C).
  • Reliable, easy to grow, generally disease and pest free. Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Native to the Americas.
