Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea)
Native to the Eastern United States, Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea) is a widely branched deciduous shrub, acclaimed for its creamy-white flower clusters that brighten shady areas and bring life to the garden. Blooming profusely from early summer to fall, the distinctly domed to nearly rounded blossoms open lime-green and change to brilliant creamy-white before switching to a tan shade in the fall.
The foliage of broad egg-shaped, sharply toothed, dark green leaves turns butter-yellow shades in fall, extending the season of interest of this magnificent flowering shrub.
- Smooth Hydrangeas typically grow up to 3-6 ft. tall and wide (90-180 cm).
- Cold-hardy, Smooth Hydrangeas can endure harsh winters and severe cold. They are excellent substitutes for Mophead Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) in colder climates.
- Smooth Hydrangeas can be grown in full sun or dappled shade (the hotter the climate, the more shade is needed) and are surprisingly drought tolerant. Best grown in average, medium, well-drained soils. Full sun is tolerated if constant moisture is provided.
- Perfect for the shrub or mixed border, wonderful planted as a flowering hedge, and excellent backdrop for your favorite perennials.
- Since Smooth Hydrangeas bloom on new wood, pruning has to happen in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous growth. The harder you prune (even to the ground), the larger the flowerheads will be.
