Hosta August Moon (Plantain Lily)

Noted for its sun tolerance, Hosta ‘August Moon’ (Plantain Lily) is a perennial forming a dense, asymmetrical mound of thick, widely oval, heart-shaped, chartreuse leaves, up to 9 in. long (22 cm), turning soft yellow, then bright golden-yellow depending on sun exposure. Searsuckered and puckered, the matt foliage displays strongly marked veins.

Searsuckered and puckered, the matt foliage displays strongly marked veins. Bell-shaped, pale lavender to white flowers appear in summer, rising on scapes 32 in. tall (80 cm). Among the first yellow-leaved hostas ever introduced, 'August Moon' is quick growing and vigorous. A perfect subject for the landscape or containers where it will illuminate your yard like an August moon.

  • Easy grower, Hosta 'August Moon' grows 20 in. tall (50 cm) and spreads over time to 42 in. (105 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Grows also exceptionally well in 4 to 5 hours of morning sun (except in the US Deep South). Shelter from cold, dry winds.
  • Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or containers
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant's growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
  • Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
