Hedychium densiflorum (Dense Ginger Lily) is a clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial boasting a profusion of fragrant, orange or yellow flowers in dense, cylindrical spikes, up to 8 in. long (20 cm), in late summer and early fall. The flowers are borne at the tips of upright stems and rise above the handsome foliage of glossy, broadly lance-shaped, mid-green leaves, up to 14 in. long (35 cm). When given a good site, Dense Ginger Lily can increase quite quickly to form large, attractive clumps of arching stems. Easy to grow and versatile, this Ginger Lily is prized for its unique charm and delicacy in flower.
- Grows up to 4-9 ft. high (120-270 cm) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm). Dense Ginger Lily sets seed and self-seeds.
- Performs best in full sun or part shade, in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold winds. Apply a deep mulch to protect your plant in frost-prone areas. Can be grown in a large container on a warm, sunny patio. Overwinter indoors or under glass.
- A pretty addition to beds and borders, containers, wall-side borders, cottage gardens, or Mediterranean gardens.
- Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for glasshouse red spider mites and aphids.
- Cut back the foliage and old flower spikes at the end of the season.
- Propagate by seed at 21-24°C as soon as ripe. Divide rhizomes in spring.
- Native to Nepal, eastern Himalaya.
