Glandularia maritima (Beach Verbena)

Adding color year-round, Glandularia maritima (Beach Verbena) is a spreading perennial forming a low mat of lustrous, dark green, ovate leaves with deeply toothed or lobed margins. They clad usually prostrate stems that creep along the ground and root as they spread, binding the sand together. Blooming year-round, with flowering peaks in spring and summer, deep pink to lavender flowers held in flat-topped terminal clusters stand out against the fine-textured foliage.

They clad usually prostrate stems that creep along the ground and root as they spread, binding the sand together. Blooming year-round, with flowering peaks in spring and summer, deep pink to lavender flowers held in flat-topped terminal clusters stand out against the fine-textured foliage. Rich in nectar, they attract bees, butterflies, and moths. A great perennial dune stabilizer, Beach Verbena also performs well in dry, inland landscapes in full sun. It can be used as a ground cover, in spectacular mass plantings, or in containers. Good for naturalizing since this plant tends to spread somewhat aggressively. This short-lived perennial wildflower is endemic primarily to Florida’s east coast. It is a state-listed endangered species.

  • Grows up to 6-12 in. tall (15-30 cm) and 36-60 in. wide (90-150 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun, in dry, loamy, clay, or sandy, well-drained soils.
  • Great candidate for wildflower gardens, as a groundcover, in mass plantings, or in containers.
  • Easy to grow, this low-maintenance plant is drought, salty wind, and salt spray tolerant.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Propagate by seed, cuttings, and division.
  • Native to Florida.
