Dactylorhiza maculata (Heath Spotted Orchid) is a tuberous terrestrial orchid boasting showy spikes, 2-4 in. long (5-10 cm), crowded with white, pink, pale purple, or purplish red flowers. The petals are decorated with beautiful patterns of dark streaks and spots. Blooming from mid-spring to late summer, the blossoms are borne atop erect, glabrous, and cylindrical stems. The lance-shaped, mid-green leaves may display brown or purple spots on the surface, hence the species name. Found in mountainous regions across much of Europe, Heath Spotted Orchid prefers sunny places on lowlands or hills, slightly damp meadows, but also in the undergrowth of dry forests, in areas with bushes, and at the edges of streams. It is ideal for a rock or woodland garden, in a wildflower meadow and looks superb when planted among grasses or in informal borders.

  • Grows up to 24 in. tall (60 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade in moist, humus-rich, acidic, well-drained soils. Will tolerate full sun if the soil is kept moist.
  • A charming addition to beds and borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, or prairies and meadows.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Deadhead flowers as they fade if required.
  • Propagate by division in early spring.
  • Dactylorhiza maculata is widespread in mountainous regions across much of Europe from Portugal and Iceland east to Russia. It is also found in Algeria, Morocco, and western Siberia.
