Cypripedium macranthos (Ladys Slipper Orchid)

Cypripedium macranthos (Lady’s Slipper Orchid) is a hardy terrestrial orchid with oblong, alternate, slightly hairy leaves and pink-mauve flowers in late spring and early summer. The charming blossoms are borne, single or in pairs, atop upright stems. They feature a large violet to reddish-purple pouch backed by darker veined sepals.

  • Thrives in partial shade in moist, almost neutral, well-drained soils. The plant should be watered abundantly during the growing season. Reduce watering in the fall and winter. Fertilize on a weekly basis with 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. Provide a thick layer of mulch in the fall.
