Cyclamen cilicium (Cilician Cyclamen)

Award-winning Cyclamen cicilium (Cicilian Cyclamen) is a lovely fall-flowering bulb with delicate flowers, in shades of white or rosy pink, 1 in. wide (2-3 cm), with reflexed, twisted petals marked with a magenta blotch at their mouth. Appearing at the same time as the foliage, their cheerful blooms, slightly honey-scented, generally last for several weeks. They rise elegantly above the decorative foliage which consists of broad, heart-shaped, mid-green leaves adorned with pretty silver patterns, that usually remain attractive throughout the winter.

• Growing up to 3-6 inches tall and wide (7-15 cm), this species is quite hardy and will survive very low temperatures. Although, it should be noted it is not as hardy as Cyclamen hederifolium, Cyclamen coum, or Cyclamen purpurascens. It will self-seed and naturalize, creating a small colony over time.

• Easily grown in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils in part shade. Low maintenance, it doesn't need weeding or deadheading! Avoid excessive summer moisture and mulch well when leaves wither.
• Best planted en masse in front of shrubs, around trees, mixed borders, and in rock gardens. Great in containers too.
• Disease free. Watch for mice or squirrels, vine weevil.
• Propagate by seed. Seeds should be soaked for 12 hours before planting. Plant tubers in very early fall.
• Cyclamen are low-growing tuberous perennials with delicate, winged 'butterfly' flowers in shades of pink to white, and dark green leaves that are beautifully shaped like ivy and marked with a lovely silver. Some species flower early in the year while others wait until late Summer, sending up successive waves of attractive blooms into early fall. Easy to grow, there are about 20 species of cyclamen and almost all of them are native to the Mediterranean.
