Cotoneaster lacteus (Parney Cotoneaster)
Cotoneaster lacteus (Parney Cotoneaster) is a large, dense, evergreen shrub with arching branches clothed in oval, leathery leaves, 2.5 in. long (6 cm), dark green above and white-hairy beneath. In late spring to early summer, the branches are studded with small pinkish white flowers held in large clusters. Attractive to bees and butterflies, they are followed by a heavy crop of red berries which are a favorite of birds in winter.

Each plant produces thousands of fruits each year, which are distributed by birds, small mammals, flowing water, and human activities. It is found in disturbed places, especially near residential sites, as well as undisturbed coastal scrub, grassland, and forests. Pretty California native shrub alternatives: Heteromeles arbutifolia (Toyon) or Rhamnus Californica (California Coffeeberry).
