Clematis x triternata Rubromarginata
Very free flowering, Clematis x triternata ‘Rubromarginata’ is a vigorous, medium-large deciduous climber with bipinnate dark green leaves and a profusion of very fragrant, starry, white flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), veined and edged with ruby-purple. Very free flowering, Clematis x triternata 'Rubromarginata' is a vigorous, medium-large deciduous climber with bipinnate dark green leaves and a profusion of very fragrant, starry, white flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), veined and edged with ruby-purple. Blooming from mid-summer to early fall, this hardy clematis is a cross between C. flammula (fragrant virgin’s bower) and C. viticella (the Italian, or purple clematis). It has inherited the fragrance of the former and the purple tints of the latter. Plant it near a patio where its billowy habit, masses of wispy blooms, and delightful fragrance can be enjoyed.
- Hardy, this clematis can quickly grow up to 10-12 ft. long (300-360 cm) and 3-6 ft. wide (90-180 cm).
- Thrives in moist, well-drained soils, in full sun or part shade. Ideally, Clematis prefer having their 'heads in the sun and their feet in the shade'. Keep the roots cool and shaded by other plants or add a layer of pebbles or flat stones at the base. Afternoon shade is appreciated in hot summer areas.
- Perfect for small spaces and city gardens, this vigorous clematis can be trained to climb walls, trellises, fences, pergolas, arches or other garden structures. It can also be left to sprawl over and through shrubs or to scramble along the ground.
- This Clematis belongs to the third group of Clematis – a group including Clematis which flower in late summer on growth made in that season. They should be pruned in late winter or early spring and require 'hard pruning': simply cut back the stems to a pair of strong buds about 1ft. (30 cm) above ground level before growth begins in early spring.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
