Calluna vulgaris Wickwar Flame (Heather)

Prized for its four seasons of interest, award-winning Calluna vulgaris ‘Wickwar Flame’ (Heather) is a compact, spreading evergreen shrub forming a dense mound of golden-yellow and orange foliage in summer, changing to coppery-red during the winter months. Profuse mauve-pink flowers are on display in late summer and contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage. Primarily a foliage plant, this Heather is terrific as a groundcover.

  • Performs best in full sun in sandy or gravelly, acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Part shade is welcomed in hot summer areas. Moist and cool climates are preferred. Do not let the soil dry out! Protect your plants from strong winds. Mulch with peat moss.
  • Easy to grow, this plant is a welcomed addition to rock gardens and makes an excellent ground cover. Combines well with dwarf conifers and deciduous shrubs.
  • Watch for spider mites, oystershell scale, or root rot. Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings
  • Callunas need annual pruning, or they become straggly. Prune in spring before the new growth appears.
