Noted for its superb foliage, Asarum splendens (Chinese Wild Ginger) is a vigorous rhizomatous perennial boasting large, elongated, heart-shaped, dark green leaves splashed with shimmering silver. Deep purple beneath, they remain semi-evergreen through mild winters and a new set of leaves is produced in spring, covering the previous year's growth. In early spring, dark chocolate-brown and purple cup-shaped flowers, 2 in. wide (5 cm), are produced under the foliage at soil level. Asarum splendens is an outstanding Chinese species that forms a thick mat of foliage, making it an ideal ground cover for shady gardens. It is also great-looking in containers. Deer resistant.
