Noted for its excellent garden performance, Armeria pseudarmeria 'Ballerina Red' (Great Thrift) is a compact, evergreen perennial boasting large, ball-shaped blooms packed with small rose-red flowers. Blooming profusely in mid to late spring, and then sporadically reblooming throughout the summer and into the early fall, they are borne on stiff stems that rise well above the cushion-shaped, grassy foliage of lance-shaped, blue-green leaves. A charming little plant that is ridiculously easy to grow and is perfect for edging walks, borders, rock gardens or containers. Low maintenance and salt tolerant, Ballerina Red is a first year flowering perennial.

  • 2009 Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner
  • Grows up to 8-10 in. tall and wide (20-35 cm). Clumps will spread slowly and will need dividing only when the plant centers become bare.
  • Best in full sun to part shade, in infertile, dry, well-drained soils. In richer soils the leaves tend to fall outwards leaving an open center. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Virtually disease and pest free, it is deer resistant and attracts bees and butterflies.
  • A great perennial plant for edging, border fronts, rock gardens, coastal gardens or massed as a ground cover for small spots.
  • Deadheading may produce a second flush of flowers.
  • Propagate by seed, division or basal cuttings
