Noted for its largest flowers of all the Amelanchiers, Amelanchier ovalis (Snowy Mespilus) is an upright, medium to large-sized, deciduous shrub or small tree boasting a profusion of erect clusters of large, 1.5 in. across (3.5 cm), slightly fragrant, white flowers in mid-spring. Attractive to pollinators, they are followed by small, round, red to dark purple berries in early summer. The berries are edible but not very palatable. Birds feast on them. The foliage of small, ovate leaves is green above and covered with a white down beneath when young. It darkens as the season progresses before turning to brilliant shades of orange, yellow and red in the fall. The plant remains attractive even after the leaves drop, thanks to its elegant growth habit and its light gray bark adorned with charcoal-gray striations. Snowy Mespilus is a very ornamental shrub or tree with multiple seasons of interest.

  • Grows up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide (4-6 m)
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, well-drained soils. Best berry production and fall color occur in full sun. Tolerant of a somewhat wide range of soils.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is also generally pest and disease free but keep an eye out for fire blight.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant, hedges, and screens. Great in naturalized or native plant gardens.
  • Propagate by seed and semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Native to central and Southern Europe, as well as North Africa and the Middle East.
