Aloe distans (Jewel Aloe)

Aloe distans (Jewel Aloe) is a compact, stemlesss evergreen succulent forming decorative rosettes, 8-10 in. wide (20-25 cm), with broadly triangular, fleshy leaves. Pale waxy blue-green in light shade, the leaves take on tinges of pink and purple when in full sun, creating a very pretty display.

Pale waxy blue-green in light shade, the leaves take on tinges of pink and purple when in full sun, creating a very pretty display. Each leaf exhibits small, soft, white teeth along the edges and the back of the leaves. In spring, spikes of bright yellow to scarlet tubular flowers are borne in profusion above the foliage to about 16 in. tall (40 cm), brightening up the garden. This Aloe offsets profusely to form compact mounds with 10 or more rosettes. Perfect as a small-scale groundcover or in decorative containers.

  • Grows up to 12 in. tall (30 cm) and 16 in. wide (40 cm).
  • Easily grown in sandy or gravelly, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Best leaf color in full sun. Water moderately when in growth; very sparingly when dormant. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for beds and borders, rock gardens, succulent gardens, or Mediterranean gardens. Ideal as a small-scale groundcover or in decorative containers. Excellent edging plant in the dry garden.
  • Deer resistant. The flowers produce nectar and are attractive to birds and bees
  • Propagate by seed sown with heat as soon as ripe or from offsets. Seeds and offsets.
  • Virtually disease free. Watch for scale insects and mealybugs.
