Aesculus pavia (Red Buckeye)
Aesculus pavia (Red Buckeye) is a large deciduous shrub or small tree of rounded habit with a dense canopy of brilliant dark green leaves, each divided into 5 narrow leaflets. In mid to late spring, erect panicles, 6 in. long (15 cm), of rich red flowers appear above the foliage for a cheerful display.

In mid to late spring, erect panicles, 6 in. long (15 cm), of rich red flowers appear above the foliage for a cheerful display. They are quite attractive to hummingbirds. The flowers give way to smooth brown capsules containing one or two lustrous dark brown seeds. Although deciduous, Red Buckeye does not produce any appreciable fall color. Low-branched and slow-growing, Red Buckeye is a lovely, small flowering tree for bringing a sparkle to the spring garden. To be used as a specimen tree, flowering screen or hedge.
- Grows up to 12-15 ft. tall and wide (360-450 cm).
- Thrives in average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Tolerates dry soils and poor soils, but prefers moist, fertile soils. Appreciates some afternoon shade in hot summer climates.
- Keep an eye out for canker, coral spot, leaf spot and horse chestnut scale.
