Abelia Edward Goucher

Award-winning Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’ is a compact, semi-evergreen shrub with upright, gracefully arching stems bearing glossy, oval, dark green leaves with a bronze tinge when young. In midsummer, abundant clusters of lilac-pink, funnel-shaped flowers adorn the bush until fall. Their attractive bronze-tinged calyces further enrich the display and persist well after the flowers fall.

A well-proved resilient plant introduced in 1911 by Edward Goucher of the United States Department of Agriculture. A superb hybrid between A. x grandiflora and A. shumannii.

  • A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Best flower production in full sun. Provide a sheltered location to help prevent hard freeze damage.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant or in small groupings, as an informal hedge or in containers.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is generally pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Blooms on new wood, so prune as needed in late winter to early spring. May need hard pruning every 3 to 4 years.
  • Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer or semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer
