Dypsis decaryi (Triangle Palm)
Exceptionally handsome, Dypsis decaryi (Triangle Palm) is a small to medium-sized palm adorned with a solitary trunk topped with a three-ranked crown of gray-green to blue-green, keeled, feather leaves. The common name of this palm comes from the triangular shape that is formed by three distinct points where the fronds emerge. The leaves, up to 10 ft. long (3 m), are held well above the horizontal and arch near their tips. The short petioles, 12 in. long (30 cm), are stacked on top of one another and form a cupped, triangular shape. The dark gray trunk, 12-20 in. thick (30-50 cm), is stocky and smooth with obvious leaf scars. In the spring, small pale yellow flowers are borne in large branched inflorescences, up to 5 ft. long (150 cm), that emerge near the base of the lower leaves. They give way to round, green, marble-size fruits that mature to creamy-white. Resistant to drought, heat, and windy conditions, Triangle Palm can sustain foliage damage in light frost and can tolerate rare dips to 30ºF (-1ºC). Endangered in its native Madagascar, Triangle Palm has been so widely cultivated that it is in no danger of disappearing. Growing at a moderate rate, it makes a strong and dramatic statement in the landscape. Terrific as a specimen or as a container plant.
- Grows with an upright habit up to 25-30 ft. tall (7-9 m) and 12-15 ft. wide (3-5 m).
- Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates partial shade, and poor and dry soil. Although it is very drought tolerant once established, it thrives with regular moisture. Keep on the dry side during the winter.
- No pruning is required.
- This palm is naturally resistant to pests but may require regular fertilization to prevent potassium deficiencies, which cause dead leaf tips.
- Propagated by seeds (fresh seeds germinate in 2-3 months) and division.
- Native to Madagascar.
