Liatris punctata var. mucronata (Texas Blazing Star)

Liatris punctata var. mucronata (Texas Blazing Star) is an upright, clump-forming perennial boasting fluffy spikes densely congested with tufted, purple to rose-pink flowers. Flowering in succession from top to bottom over several weeks, the spectacular flower spikes contrast nicely with the finely textured, grassy foliage. They are a great nectar source for bees and butterflies and also provide seeds for migrating birds. This beautiful southern native provides a lovely floral display in late summer and fall. Easy to grow and low care, Texas Blazing Star adds a strong vertical accent in sunny borders, prairie, or rock gardens. It tolerates alkaline soils better than most other species.

• Grows up to 1-3 ft. tall (30-90 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm). Will self-seed in sandy soil.
• Thrives in full sun and prefers gravelly, sandy, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Tolerant of alkaline soils, drought, and summer heat. Too much water will lead to root rot.
• Virtually pest and disease free.
• An excellent choice for perennial borders, rock gardens or native plant gardens, prairies and meadows.
• Cut back to 3 in. (7 cm) after the first hard freeze.
• Native to Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.
