Compact and easy to grow, Hypericum androsaemum (Sweet Amber) is a small, bushy, deciduous shrub with upright, arching stems blanketed with oval, fresh green leaves, 4 in. long (10 cm). Clusters of showy, golden yellow flowers are on display from late spring to late summer. Each cup-shaped flower presents 5 petals surrounding a prominent tuft of golden stamens. They are followed by long-lasting, berry-like, red fruits that mature to black. Birds are attracted to the fruits and help spread the seed to other locations. Useful as a tall groundcover, on shaded slopes or in a wildlife garden.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall and wide (60-90 cm). Freely self-seeds in the landscape.
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in medium moisture, well-drained soils. Shade tolerant but too much shade would reduce the flower production. Drought tolerant.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is also generally pest and disease free. Wilt and root rot may be an issue in hot and humid climates. Deer resistant.
  • Perfect as a specimen or massed in beds and borders, cottage gardens, slopes, naturalized areas.
  • Propagate by seed and semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Native to Europe, northern Africa, western Asia.
