Among the most resplendent of hedychiums, award-winning Hedychium 'Tara' (Ginger Lily) is an upright herbaceous perennial boasting large and dense racemes, up to 10 in. long (25 cm), packed with fragrant orange flowers in late summer and early fall. Long and prominent red stamens emerge from each flower, giving the inflorescence a striking appearance. Since each of the bracts contains several flower buds, the showy blossoms last longer in beauty than many species. The flowers are borne at the tips of upright stems and rise above the handsome foliage of blue-green, lance-shaped leaves. Even when not in flower, 'Tara' looks great on patios or decks with a tropical theme.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 5-6 ft. high (150-180 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
- Performs best in full sun or part shade, in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold winds. Apply a deep mulch to protect your plant in frost prone areas. Can be grown in a large container on a warm, sunny patio. Overwinter indoors or under glass.
- A pretty addition to beds and borders, containers, wall-side borders, cottage gardens or Mediterranean gardens.
- Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for glasshouse red spider mite and aphids.
- Propagate by division of rhizomes in spring.
